Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Placed Military Personnel in Danger with Messaging App Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense report has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, according to a source familiar with the report.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not authorized for handling sensitive material.

Potential Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only shared information that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
