European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
