A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose term ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital undertakings.
