In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Political Consultations Underway
In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
