Each time a significant honors show nears, there’s always a demand for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.
Another commentator made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent compact experiences, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay generations.
