Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with European nations starting at a significant disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a service under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, if it fails to take bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
