Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," said a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
