Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
